William G. Jones, CPA (retired)
Bill has lived in Carroll County since the early 1980’s with his wife, JoAnn. Bill has developed strong ties to the community through his family, his accounting practice, his community involvement, and, of course, his time at the golf course.
Professionally, Bill has focused his practice in two areas: tax planning & preparation and business valuation services. He has extensive experience in tax planning and preparation for businesses, individuals, and estates and trusts. From 1996 – 2020, Bill also performed business valuations, but he has recently retired from these projects.
As an active member of the community, Bill has been on the board of directors at New Windsor State Bank, including serving as the chair of the Audit Committee; president and treasurer of Westminster Riding Club; treasurer of the Carroll County Historical Society; treasurer of the Carroll Arts Council; and a member of the Planned Giving Committee at Carroll Hospital Center. In addition, he has served as campaign treasurer for various political candidates.
Bill is a graduate of University of Baltimore. He earned his credentials as a Certified Public Accountant in 1983. Bill holds memberships in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants.
Kimberly A. Lakin, CPA
Kimberly is a proven leader with more than 25 years of experience in public accounting. She is an expert in the preparation of individual and business tax returns. She is also experienced in the preparation of estate & trust returns. Kimberly has enjoyed developing long-term relationships with her clients where she is relied upon to provide tax planning and guidance to assist her clients with meeting their financial goals. She has served clients in many industries, including construction, medical services, legal services and education.
Kimberly received her accounting degree from Towson University and is a licensed CPA in the state of Maryland. She has been a resident of Carroll County for the last 20 years.
Kimberly is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants, and the Maryland Society of Accounting and Tax Professionals.
Emily J. Brown, PhD, MD-ITP
Emily Brown is one of the accounting professionals at the firm. Emily moved to Carroll County in 2000 with her husband, Rob. Emily received her doctorate in Chemistry from Michigan State University in 2001 and then began her teaching career at Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College). During this time, Emily and Rob started their family. Emily soon determined she would like a more set schedule for raising her family and began taking accounting courses. Emily discovered she really liked accounting, so she finished her coursework, became a CPA candidate, and went to work part-time with Davis & Jones in 2005. Emily has been working with Bill ever since.
Professionally, Emily has developed expertise in tax planning and tax preparation, as well as QuickBooks support. Emily prepares individual, business, and nonprofit tax returns. In addition, she works on compilation and review engagements. Emily especially enjoys working with our clients, problem solving, being a technology resource, and exploring the ever changing environment of tax law.
Emily’s commitment to the community is reflected in the many ways she volunteers through religious, sports, and civic organizations. Emily is a past treasurer of the Charles Carroll PTA and East Middle PTO and serves her church in multiple capacities, including ministry chair, Sunday School teacher, and coordinator of various fundraising activities to benefit local missions. Emily and Rob continue to live in Carroll County, raising their 3 sons, who keep her very busy as a soccer and karate mom!
Emily received her undergraduate degree from Western Maryland College and her doctorate from Michigan State University. Emily is certified with the state of Maryland as an Individual Tax Preparer. Emily holds memberships in the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants and the Maryland Society of Accounting & Tax Professionals.
Jennifer Ramsey, CPA
Jennifer graduated from the University of Alabama with a B.S. in Accounting (1989) and a Masters of Tax Accounting (1990). Following graduation, she joined the tax department of the Birmingham, Alabama office of Ernst and Young and later transferred to the Baltimore office when her husband was stationed at Ft. Meade. She obtained her CPA license in 1991.
While raising children and moving many times with the U.S. Army for her husband’s job, she took a break from public accounting but continued working with a few private tax clients and doing VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) for military families while stationed overseas. She started doing seasonal tax work again in 2018 and joined Jones, Lakin, & Company in 2019.
Sherry Hartman
Sherry is one of the friendly faces that will greet you at the front desk or answer your incoming calls. Assisting with office administration and QuickBooks support, Sherry has been with the firm since 2013. She continually strives to provide the highest level of customer service to all our clients.
She currently has an A.A. in Computer Science, an A.A. in Applied Science, and Certified QuickBooks User. In her free time, Sherry is an avid history buff. She enjoys researching 18th & 19th century material culture and reproducing clothing of the era.
